Steffen,
I was thinking about that. I only reluctantly settled on incorporating the
fish. I wouldn't mind using some other symbol, but it's hard to sum up
computational chemistry in a simple re-sizable vector image (unless you want
ANOTHER utility with a benzene ring or vanderwalls surface as its icon). I
also think there's a joke with a fish swimming in a flask that is lost if
anything else is substituted in that flask.
Now... I could try to give the fish a lab coat, have him modelled to
resemble an sp3 orbital ... or ... have him hooked up to a computer (at the
risk of making it too complicated). It might work, I'll play around with it.
Although OB is certainly more than a translator, its key feature is the
ability to interconvert formats, and that's what its name (and current icon)
suggests to me. I suppose a toolbox/toolkit motif could work ... but I think
fish/flask sums up chemistry+babelfish. That's simple and mostly accurate.
But I'll try anything you can suggest.

Let the bike-shedding begin :-)
Only after your mail I looked at the current OB logo :-)
I got to know OB as the babelfish of formats,
but reading the list recently and looking into the build/bin
I feel that it is more than "just" the fish.
So what about replacing the fish in the flask
by something more computational chemistry ?
What I like is that it is easier than the current design
to make a small version of it (with less detail,
and without the O/Ba elements) for use as icons,
especially favicon.
Yours,
Steffen
