As a non java guy I can honestly say that I would never look inside the code for a version number. It needs to be part of the installer or zip file name to have any meaning for normal people. Sorry but my 2 cents worth. What we have now is beyond confusing and as a result will leave most folks to think the project is not worked on very often.
