I recently upgraded to 1.1 and forgot to check my mail server setting
in the admin. I added the IP address of my internal SMTP server with
no username and password (which is not necessary on the SMTP side if
the connection is coming from my local network), and the "Test
Connection" checkbox. The following error is returned: "Mail server
verification failed: failed to connect." If I enter a username and
password, the verification is successful.

Since, I shouldn't need a username and password in my environment, I
think that the verification string may be trying to authenticate with
invalid or null credentials and that my mail server is rejecting those
credentials.

However, even though the verification in admin fails, messages are
successfully delivered using the failed-verify setting.
