Matt, Thanks for the reply. The problem was that despite my having installed JAVA 1.6 and configured (perhaps misconfigured) alternatives, Tomcat was using version 1.4 which came with Redhat 5. I manually changed the symbolic links in /etc/alternatives and everything worked like a charm.
Did I say how I really hate the naming of different flavors of JAVA and how alternatives does its business? Thanks, Ross.
