I'm looking @ it on the Google Groups web UI, and it's showing up in
the "Query from MySQL contains NULLS not empty strings" thread as a
"Discussion subject changed to "cfmail" by tom thomas".

On the main listing @ http://groups.google.com/group/openbd?pli=1 it
lists as "cfmail", but when one goes into it (http://groups.google.com/
group/openbd/browse_thread/thread/be1d83867d6b24be) it reverts to
"Query from MySQL contains NULLS not empty strings", with the
"discussion subject changed..." thing halfway down.

And when writing this reply, if I click the "Edit Subject" link, the
subject line is "Re: cfmail", not the original thread title.

I am guessing your email clients are threading by subject rather than
thread ID or whatever, so - yeah - you do see it as a new thread.
