Just a guess, but since on production GAE you may not always be hitting the
same instance of your application every time, I wonder if sessions don't
persist across instances of your application.

Another thing to check--did you have setclientcookies set to true? That may
not help the situation I describe above if there are issues but I'd be
curious if that would make a difference.
