Update: I just tried with a simple folder E:\test_docs\ with about 10 PDFs only. I was unable to create the index - each time I received the above error (using the BD Admin). I used the defaults first, then toggled each field (recurse, extensions [all or just pdf], URL Path [empty or populated], a trailing slash or not etc), all with the same results. So now it is not just inside/outside the webroot, but creating the index at all...
I also tried the same combinations with the CFINDEX tag, and then with CFSCRIPT and CollectionIndexPath. I also wrapped the calls in CFTRY/CFCATCH but I gues BD Internal Errors are not trapped...
