Well I'm not sure about the most elegant solution, but as a general rule; I always try to maintain ANY user-supplied content in the exact same form as originally provided by the user.
Any change you need to make to that original - is done at the point you present the content back - and is done temporarily for the manner of presentation at hand. Technology is always marching forward, and you can't be blamed for keeping whatever you were given.
