I would say it depends on what you want to do with the AJAX calls and if
your wanting to provide user interaction through a GUI. If your wanting to
provide interaction for the client then I would be looking at a JS
solution.

If your wanting something for just the server to interact with the data
using AJAX then look to something middleware like a message que and a
library like CFJSON (or something else that would fit your needs.)

Although there is CFAJAX, the apps I have developed in the past on Adobe,
Railo or OpenBD I have always engineered some sort of middleware between
data and CF server. This allows my application to be hosted on any of the
platforms since I am minimizing the use of special tags that are
propietary.

Also keep in mind there are JAVA solutions you could use to assist with
your AJAX setup.
