Hi,
Openbravo is planning to implement a new User Interface in the upcoming
releases. As part of the process to implement this new User Interface,
we are selecting a UI/ajax framework. This post is to inform the
community and to ask for feedback/experience with the four frameworks we
have selected as potential candidates.

The past few months several new UI concepts have been designed and
discussed with the community. The goal for the next release is to
incorporate these concepts in a new Openbravo UI. For more information
on next generation Openbravo UI concepts see these links:
http://openbravouxlab.blogspot.com/
http://forge.openbravo.com/plugins/espforum/browse.php?group_id=100&forumid=886353

The next step for the development team is to choose a UI technology
which allows us to implement these new concepts. The process we are
following is described here:
http://wiki.openbravo.com/wiki/ERP/3.00/Projects/UI_Technology

As part of this process we have looked at 22 libraries/frameworks. The
aspects we looked at:
- community activity: forum size, forum activity, articles/blogs/hits
- architecture (client-server): does it fit in the envisioned
architecture of Openbravo
- development approach: javascript, tag based, etc., should fit in a
dynamically/runtime generated UI
- target usage: on a scale between website-enhancing to RIA
- maturity/professionalism of the project: releases, test approach,
customers/users, documentation, books etc.
- component/widget set: in both breadth and depth, targeted at
administrative systems

With these aspects in mind we have selected four projects which are
potential candidates for being used as the basis for the new Openbravo
UI (in alphabetical order):
- dojo: http://dojotoolkit.org/
- extjs: http://extjs.com/
- jquery: http://jquery.com/
- yui: http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/

Note: although extjs is in this list, there are potential blocking
issues related to their licensing policy.

With this post I want to ask the community (you!) for feedback and your
experience with any of these technologies. Feel free to share successes
but also obstacles you encountered when using these technologies!
To centralize the comments/feedback it would be great if you can react
in the original post here:
http://forge.openbravo.com/plugins/espforum/view.php?group_id=100&forumid=886353&topicid=6995962

Based on the community feedback and further analysis we want to get down
to a list of 2 technologies which we will prototype.

Thanks!

gr. Martin
