I remember at least sometimes having binaries built only during 'make check' ... there are some check_PROGRAMS around our repositories. I personally don't care much either way; having test binaries built during 'make' forces me to fix the test builds along right away, not only when I remember to run 'make check', which can be helpful or get in the way depending on the situation. We can change to use check_PROGRAMS everywhere, but there are other more important things to care about (unless there are packaging / release implications). ~N
