The crashing is very likely due to running out of memory.
This is in the archives of misc and on google, no doubt.
What you have to do is establish large limits for the user(s) that
use mozilla, the best way to do this is in /etc/login.conf
I have a user named "java" that I use just for firefox.
(Line from vipw i.e. /etc/master.passwd
java:$2a$06$JV9Q3bEl0KsmR8u1xkgbBtR4yyEP7oPJmPsGALeQCddKQKL8wxxCu:2110:2110:mozi
lla:0:0:Java Browser:/home/java:/bin/ksh
This user, notice, is a member of login class "mozilla"
In /etc/login.conf, I have this entry:
#
# For users of resource hog mozilla*
#
mozilla:\
:datasize-cur=512M:\
:datasize-max=infinity:\
:stacksize-max=16M:\
:stacksize-cur=16M:\
:maxproc-max=256:\
:maxproc-cur=128:\
:openfiles-cur=128:\
:openfiles-max=128:\
:tc=default:
That has proven to be adequate. I typically have three to five
mozilla windows open (all from the same root-window), with ten or
more tabs per window. (Machine with dual P-III 1GHz and 512MB mem,
and mediocre graphics card, some kind of obsolete ATI. (Dell Poweredge
1550).
My default for login.conf is the default default ;-)
if "pau" is your regular user name on the laptop, use vipw to
put pau in class "mozilla" (or whatever you name it), and at next
login the new limits should be in play. (man ulimit, man login.conf,
man 5 passwd, man vipw).

You should hear the screams when an old BSD user tries to use Linux.
Maybe you should take a break and return to BSD later.
Sorry, no gimp/kde/similar-stuff experience here.
