I played a little bit around with the stylsheets and the html pages and now I hope you get an idea what I mean. I used a stylsheet in the way you like for submenus - ab*c (this is regex with a, b and c are submenus).
I have some trouble with Konqueror vs. Mozilla. The result is that I used a table. Perhaps you know a better way to produce such a result.
