I don't know if a patch exists for Netscape 4.8 but Mozilla has official patch and un-official ones that adds the ability to sign a text in pkcs#7 format.

The official is available from the mozdev site but it is not compatible as
they have changed the name of the function AFAIK, the latter one - a
mozilla version already patched - is available from wamcom (www.wamcom.org).
