What do you use for configuring the httpd user and group - IDs or names? I had trouble with this if I used IDs or I'm not root. I have some time on friday to verify the known problems. Actually I have two open issues - some wrong paths like mentioned in your patch, one installation problem and your problem with daemon startup.
