sad news... It would be nice if this were fixed in OpenSSL itself by
the maintainers.

Unfortunately I am pretty busy this week as well, so I am afraid I
don't have the time to test your patch. In fact, it seems that we
will have to patch our OpenCA packages locally to work around
the OpenSSL bug:
Problem is that in our project the OpenSSL package is not delivered
by us but by a contractor. We will contribute the OpenCA packages, so
this is the most convenient place to apply changes for us.

BTW: package building from Friday's CVS seems broken, it has been some
time since I last built packages. I'll file a bug report on SF.
