If you are using one of the last SNAPs of OpenSSL this could be related
to a bug in the password handling from within the 'req' command. I sent
the patch to OpenSSL yesterday but I had not checked comments about this.

I attach the openssl/apps/req.c (20010822) file you can use (you'll have
to recompile openssl...).
