Yes, I did

I am doing these tests on a laptop using VMware (great product),
  so there's only 64MB DRAM, but there is 512MB of swap space.
  The logs are unaffected by the make. I think it's a bit
  unlikely, since the make stops at the same point each time.

The problem is very repeatable. It happens with both the last
  two SNAPs, but not with 0.8.1 - it doesn't appear to happen
  until I add --exec-prefix=..., although I can't guarantee
  that yet.
