Perhaps I should have been a little more explicit.  I'm not having a
difficult time using Perl -- the proper perl executable is found on my
system.  What is not being found is the DB perl modules, i.e., DB_File.pm.
These are installed under Perl 5.6.0, not Perl 5.6.1 (which is required).

I am really new to OpenCA (big thanks to the developers on this
occasion!!), but maybe the following helps:

"you must simply call configure the following way
env PERL=/path/to/perl ./configure ...."
  (taken from
ftp://ftp.openca.org/pub/openca/developers/bell/doc/OpenCA-guide.pdf;
which is a really helpful document IMO).
