The cause seems the optimizations of the compiler when building a homebrewed
version of openssl (at least according to postings in a newsgroup).

Using the RPM from  ftp://ftp.openca.org/pub/openca/openssl/ did it.

Wondering where this packages come from and how they are build. On the
ftp-site of openssl.org I can't get a version 0.9.8.x.
