No, it is correct.

There is a nice filter: (userCertificate=*)
This filter matches all entries which has an attribute userCertificate.

This is correct because the certificates are binary. You can check your 
LDAP with slapcat which is part of OpenLDAP (/usr(local/)/sbin/slapcat/.
