Is it possible to change the starting serial number

Yes, it is possible. I did it too.

We are operating an older version of OpenCA and want
to upgrade to the newer version. I want to start the
new OpenCA with a different serial to avoid overlap
with the old system. If I change the starting serial from the default '01' to '101' I always get an error
when generating a new certificate (cannot insert the
new certificate into database). Any ideas?
1. Which version of OpenCA do you use?
2. Which databasebackend do you use (DBM-files or SQL-database)?
3. If you use a SQL-database then which database do you use?
4. Do you install the new version on a different computer or at minimum with a different prefix to avoid collisions?

I know that some of the questions are trivial but it's necessary to avoid confusions.
