you can only share the database between nodes of the same level (more specifically, the same PKI instance). As separate instances do not have a common name space in term of DN, serial number etc, it is not possible to share the database. Thus if you are running two hierarchy levels on the same machine you will have to install them separately and define a common exchange directory on the file system.
