Hello everyone, I'm writing a thesis about PKI's (X.509 being one of them) and I'll be deploying an X.509 one as a practical part of my work. The implementation must be Open Source and it may be that after installed it will be used in the future by university.
I've found projects OpenCA and OpenXPKI, read their sites but I need some clarification. It is my understanding that OpenCA is no longer under development, only bugs (security related?) are fixed, last version being 0.9.5. OpenXPKI project is the next version of OpenCA, there is all development going, the first release is scheduled in late 2006 and it's not working yet. Is that correct?[1] If it is, I thought about installing OpenCA and then moving it to OpenXPKI once it's released (it probably won't be me). Is this a good idea? Can someone shed some light would that be possible and how hard (or easy) could that be? The platform preferred would be FreeBSD if that's related. An off-topic question - if anyone knows about other Open Source X.509 PKI related projects please let me know. I've found some in Open-source PKI Book[2] but most of the links are dead now (I guess the book project is dead, too). I'm sorry for any language mistakes I probably made, English is not my first language. I hope it's readable ;) Thank you in advance, Karol P.S. I posted similar message to OpenXPKI-users list to catch more people. I hope that's OK.
