I think at the moment you can only login via certificate or an user
located in the xml config file...

You are right if that's your case :-)

So in my opinion the difference between signing and not signing an
request is mainly that the ca part could automatically issue the
certificate if you have an automated change between the ra and the ca.
If you do not sign the accepted request you meight have to issue the
cert manually. But I'm not sure, just from my mind :-)

Well I think you need 2 things: An user certificate to sign and this
java applett there. Don't know where to get this, did you try to find it
with google?
