Thank you very much for your help. I had indeed missed the trailing
space, as you have noticed.
I added $command.="-set_serial 0x0 "; to the genCert subroutine, then
re-initialized the CA,
and the serial number was correctly set to 0.
(I did the re-initialization in the following way:
1) Dropped the tables ca_certificate, certificate, crl, crr, request
from mysql database openca_db;
2) Deleted the files cacert.pem, cacert.der, cacert.txt from
$OPENCA_DIR/var/crypto/cacerts directory;
3) Deleted the file $OPENCA_DIR/var/crypto/keys/cakey.pem.
4) Used links Initialize Database, Generate new CA secret key, Generate
new CA Certificate Request
(use generated secret key) and Self Signed CA Certificate (from
already generated request)
from General->Initialization->Initialize Certification Authority .)
