Hi,

in config.xml you can specifiy where you mail program can be found
that openca should use to send out the mails. By default it is
somethine like
/some/path/sendmail -n -t
but i had to remove either -n or -t (nor sure anymore), just test it
which command works from your console.
The next thing you have to check ist wether your mail program is
configured correctly, usually it tries to contact directly to the
destination host to send its mail, but if you are connected for
example per dial in you have to configure sendmail in a way, that it
will authenticate to a mail provider and send its mail over this mail
provider.

Kind regards, Matthias
