Don't seem a problem with the Serial really. Something seems broken before that line, as "HASH(0xa74b560)" has no sense there. But I don't use sub CAs, can not replicate your problem here, and also I don't know the procedure for it. *I can only speculate*, but I think the code is checking in the DB for the root CA signer certificate, and maybe it is not finding it.
