As a post-script to this Q: the more I think of it, the more a pointless exercise it 
seems... since 0x1A in binary is 0001 1010 as is decimal 26... so if I send LC byte 
assigned (byte)26 will it know to read in 26 bytes from data field ?  The source of my 
confusion is that JavaCard seems to have everything in hex i.e. ISO Status Words etc.

So can anybody please explain whether or not it makes a difference if I assign the 
byte value in decimal or hex ?
