The state of the smart card industry WRT interoperability between cards,
card terminals and host systems is a big mess, EMV notwitstanding. Answering
a question with ad hominum attacks does nothing to further the discussion.
There certainly must have been a number of other ways that you could have
expressed your opinion and presented your facts without attacking Peter
Tomlinson personally.

Thanks, I'll have a look at these. How widely do you think these will
be adopted by the industry as a whole? As a computer systems vendor
that has card applications supported in our software and card terminals
poking out of our hardware, we have have to play with standards that
are followed by the financial industry as well as standards (or lack
of them) that are followed by everyone else. It is very frustrating
to spend 90% of my time writing code that handles the EXCEPTIONS
rather than the norms. As an industry, the smart card folks should be
ashamed at the lack of standards we have today and the fact that
almost every card and card terminal is custom. But I suppose that is
inevitable when for 25 years we have had a tightly vertical market
that has not had the words "open" or "compatable" in it's vocabulary.
