Hello,

It was a well known FAQ that the Comm API (and so all OCF
CardTerminal using it) couldn't work w/o a workaround in
the latest Java2 Plugin (1.2.x or 1.3.0). The error message
was "name can't be null" and even with the workaround, the
error message was still appearing, there was no way to avoid it.

Well, it has been fixed! I downloaded the latest version
for Solaris: "Download Version 2.0.1 for Solaris/SPARCTM"
on the advice of somebody from Sun wishing to help (that I
add in Bcc and ... *thanks a lot*! :-) and tried my sample
of applet using Comm and the error has just disappeared! :-D.
I ran my test on Linux using BlackDown JDK 1.2.2 appletviewer.
Note: On Linux, the same JAR file as in Solaris is used and we
just specify a different native driver (Driver=gnu.io.RXTXCommDriver)
in the properties file.

So the good news is that it'll work for both Solaris and Linux
at the same time. Now I'm not sure this JAR file could be
used under windows with "com.sun.comm.Win32Driver" specified..?
It seemed to me that the Windows JAR file was different, in which
case Windows people would have to wait for the release of 2.0.1
for Windows..

For Unix people, please download the latest 2.0.1 from:

        http://java.sun.com/products/javacomm/index.html

and just copy the new JAR file in your "jre/lib/ext/" directory:
it will solve the applet problem (with Java Plugin). I will be
doing some more tests on monday to see if by chance it wouldn't
fix also the problem with Netscape JVM, due to the fact that the
native DLL is loaded in the static initializer of the javax.comm
classes and that you cannot request the necessary privileges for
the thread running the static initializer. I will also try with
the newly released JDK 1.3 RC1 for Linux.

I'll let you know what works.

Cheers,
Christophe.
