Yes, it is possible, even in Windows ;-). There is a workaround
for the fact that version 2.0 of Comm is not compatible with the
Java2 security model, it is to create "by hand" the driver object
before the SmartCard.start() command and all automatic configuration.

where you will find the lines of code to add in your applet for
this workaround.
Please note that you will still have an error message, that
(if I am right) cannot be caught :-(, but regardless of this
message, ... it works !
