Hi,
may be you would choose a PC/SC compatible reader and work with OCF and
IBM's PC/SC-OCF gateway. This will give you the Java flexibility and
portability, while ensuring most reader connectivity under Windows
(espacially with WIN2K that natively integrate PC/SC framework and performs
automatic intallation within this framework). If sometime you want to run
under UNIX, then OCF and JAVA protability will really help you. That's the
choice we made, and it works fine, either under Windows and Linux. Hence, my
response would be, take the best of all!

Cheers,
