Alain : Cool idea, Xavier. Java's Virtual Machine implementation allows
one version to run on any platform that supports the VM. An excellent
idea. It is somewhat "surprising" that no one has yet devised a
Java-based HyperCard-wannabe, but not THAT surprising because Java, in
practice, seems more like hot steam than ready-to-consume home brew.
Lots of talk but very little is ever cooked up in Java, because of its
complexity and the poor-quality of its GUI toolbox. But if you, and
other prgrammers on this list, can engineer OpenCard as a Java app or
applet, then go for it. Java and C and C++ are all the same in my book.
I'm a scripter at heart.

> Xavier Bury : I'm gonna dig it in deep...

Alain : Are you also familiar with Apple's Open Scripting Architecture
(OSA) ? I ask because another member of the OpenCard list has informed
us that OSA has Java hooks. We could thus make the Mac version of our
new HyperCard OSA scriptable ( AppleScript, etc ).

> Xavier Bury : how long you think will it take?

Alain : Several months ... A year ... for a usable version. Indefintely
after that.

> Xavier Bury : ... (working on a cool new tool!)

Alain : Tell us more .. tell us more ... tell us what are you working
on, Xavier.

Alain : We have moved the HyperCard-clone discussion to the new list,
below :

mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Alain : Please use this list instead of the HyperCard list hosted by
Jacque. In my view, we moved away from the latter list just in time ...
because a tide of discontent has since washed across that list
concerning our OpenCard initiative. We don't want to alienate them any
more than we have already, so please post messages concerning our clone
to the OpenCard list.
