Michael Fair : What is the collaboration piece?
Alain : To achieve our aim to have a new HyperCard-like program
(OpenCard), with a insanely easy but powerful scripting language
(xTalk), fully-equipped with pre-scripted end-user solutions and
development tools (UFP) ... to achieve all of this, we will need to
concert our efforts. Thus the "collaboration piece".
Michael Fair : I didn't say anything about because I didn't know what
it was...
Alain : Other (very market-oriented) people that I have had the
displeasure of working with recently just didn't get the
"collaboration" concept that underlies evereything I do. I dismissed it
at the time, but now that other people such as yourself are also the
same questions, I am starting to ask myself some questions.
Michael Fair : Could someone describe it to me?
Alain : The collaboration piece is an infrastructure to facilitate and
structure the work of our group, so as to achieve an optimal outcome.
It is composed of repositories of shared information that are
searchable, and many means of mediated communication to discuss it,
debate it, vote on it, etc. And tools to organize our goals, our tasks,
our scheduling, etc.
Michael Fair : Is there someone up for that?
Alain : Me ... Me ... Me !
Alain : Here's why : (1) Internet-mediated communication is my thing. I
have a graduate degree in Communication. I am currently doing research
in the field of computer mediated communication with a strong emphasis
on educational applications of these technologies. (2) The UFP and
OpenCard collaboration infrastructures are already 80% ready. My two
partners and me have been working on them for several months now.
Despite the fact that I have said this before, its release is imminent
! (3) I have been hosting these aspects of the UFP and OpenCard
collaborations for several months already. (4) Content-wise, I am a bit
of a loss. I am not a C programmer. I have some very good notions and
experience in interface design, but don't ask me to program one in
anything other than a scripting language.
Alain : All of this to say that I will undoubtedly be quite involved
with the collaborative aspects of our groups. Perhaps I have wetted
your appetite for these aspects of our collaborative work. If so, you
are more than welcome to participate, Micheal.
