 This is along the lines of what I had in mind. If this covers our behinds
against everything mentioned above, we should be able to do this. But
instead of appending it to every message we could require people to sign
this before subscribing to the mailing list, and we should mention it on
our web site prominently. Would this be legally sufficient? It sure is more
convenient.

Yes, Having this statement included in the subscription list should suffice. A
one line blurb would also be a good idea for the first letter to be received
by potential authors

"OpenKard is a not for profit project. All submissions are voluntary and
unpaid."

The paragraph included in the subscription list should suffice, but by
including the second one liner in the first letter received by potential
authors you add one more line of defense.
