Eric: Regarding the name basicCard, i suggest the name
coz HC is a very high level language. Plus basic is
the first language of many programmers.
Uli: Basic is still very ill regarded among
programmers.
Alain: It is my impression too that BASIC, fairly or
not, is ill-regarded by most programmers.
Uli: It's a toy language for beginners, and as
OpenCard is meant to appeal to both beginners and
professionals, I'd speak out against it.
Alain: BASIC is closer to being a "real" programming
language than HyperTalk is. That's what I like about
HyperTalk! It's the least dweeby of them all. On the
dark side, however, it means that this toy argument is
often directed at scripting languages like HyperTalk.
Our OpenTalk will probably suffer the same un-founded
criticisms of being "toy-like". Let the children play,
I say!
Uli: Also, it'd be misleading to people looking for a
BASIC dialect.
Alain: Right again.
Eric: I agree, VolksCard implies affordable, mass
vehicle... It also implies a lot of rather dark
history (understatement).
Uli: I'm from Germany, no need to tell me, but
actually Volkswagen is a pretty successful company
over here (and also in the US) and especially the
Beetle has a huge followership especially in
California.
Alain: I have always been a fan of beatles too (car
and band). I associate them with the flower power era
when it seemed like society was going to be radically
transformed for the better. The revolution pettered
out, but it did leave behind lasting effects, like
less racial intolerance, womens rights, and so on. The
new beatles look pretty cool too! -- no, Paul, George
and Ringo have not re-united!!!
