tial) reply to Mark's questions re: metaCard licensing, synergy, etc.
I am trying to focus the groups attention on the partnership agreement first.
Any contract made between the partnership and metaCard presupposes a
partnership agreement. I.e. I'm trying to put the cart (a partnership
agreement) before two horses (contract with metaCard and contract -i.e.
licence- to end users).
The only advantage which i would propose to being a partner would be a licence
to use the MC engine in exchange for development work.
I have downloaded the MC lite and started working with it. It is 80% HT
compatible. Its graphics are full color and i think are better than AddColor
(they are certainly quicker). I expect that what MC provides already would
suffice for the needs of beta testers (its full color and allows standalone
construction, though I do not know what the field or script limits are).
I do not know exactly what MC wants in exchange for granting a license to the
partnership or its members.
I've read the MC license: it specifically prohibits 'reverse engineering'.
Since the distribution comes with no source code, we would have to negotiate
something with MC _after the partnership agreement is drafted ( a job of 2
days work but for which I must know what we desire with as much precision as
possible...) I expect MC would let us use, but not distribute, source code.
Related note: the MC license is a somewhat ambiguous : they do not appear to
have a license specific to their 'lite version'. I would happily draft such a
'lite' license for metaCard. This would prevent a later end user from claiming
a full license on the basis of distribution of the lite version. Really,
metaCard does need this, so please forward this message to Scott -or whoever.
I am also happy to help with graphic representation of the MC interface (I
work at an art school so might even foist some of it off to students - if MC
is looking for interns, please let me know).
Oh, I am still wondering why MC does not negotiate with Apple regarding HC
III? As we can see with QuickTime, apple has (finally) adopted an agressive
software development strategy, supporting cross platforms.
Ok?
