Rob Cozens: I also formed a for-profit corporation
this year ... I am on the Board of Directors of a
non-profit corporation, and might be able to get some
insight from original board members or the
foundation's account or attorney.

Eric: That changes things slightly. _IF_ (and it is a _really big if) we can
get a charitable corporation set up for FREE (or nearly free) by your
accountant (yes, an accountant would have the legal expertise required to do
the paper work involved in establishing a corporation) that would be A Good
Thing. But, with the added hassle of annual meetings, posts... Well, let me
fantasize:
Assuming I have the resources; which organization is better?
Partnership - flexible, easy
Corp - secure
Purpose - creation of a freeware.

Partnership is better. My answer would change if the business were later to
become a profit oriented entity, or if it were to be sold. Or if the charity
did dangerous things like driving trucks, construction, power lines etc. It is
quite unlikely that a computer will blow up in the end users face after all.
Given the low risk (software crashing a system? carpal tunnel syndrome?
Really, _the business risk is torts (accidents), Contracts pose a risk as
well, but the potential damages are much lower.
