Is a finite state machine the most effective way to do it? Or can't we use
something else? Anyhow, remember to comment everything extensively so it
remains as understandable as possible.

Well, CW handles it ... that makes one. But I had trouble getting it to
work this way. Nested templates seem to be a problematic issue in all
compilers.
