Rob Cozens: Please forgive my ignorance... UFP is on
the list of things I'd like to know more about but
never found the time to do so, right there next to XOS
and Serf.
Alain: The UFP is in suspended-animation at this time.
Rob Cozens: My understanding is it is an attempt to
coordinate and standardize HyperCard scripting efforts
so works by different authors can work together.
Alain: Create a collection of pre-scripted HyperTalk
handlers and stack-based solutions to ease the life of
those who are less proficient with HyperTalk/HyperCard
than we are. Rapid application development tools for
the masses.
Rob Cozens: If this is so, it seems to me the FreeCard
partnership might be able to draw from work done and
lessons learned by UFP.
Alain: Members of the UFP are scripters. As a rule,
they don't want to re-write HyperCard. They want to
create value-added solutions without touching C source
code. In my view, they are nonetheless complimentary.
FreeCard builds the application, while the UFP
provides the pre-scripted handlers and stack-based
solutions based on the application. Among other
things, we avoid the usual conundrum faced by new
software/platforms that initially lack
content/software.
Rob Cozens: Is there something there for us?
Alain: Experienced scripters are one of the best
sources for information, suggestions, and so on where
scripting is concerned. Current usage trends of the DO
command, for example, could be polled from them.
Statistical analysis of the collection of handlers
could identify oft-coded segments, which could in turn
give us clues to desirable syntax improvements. Not to
mention that we had many discussions concerning how to
manage software versioning in an open collaborative
environment, etc.
