Anthony: Alain, you must of missed the "<g>" after my comment. I was kidding :) Alain: I am notoriously bad a getting jokes, even in person. Its much worse when the medium is e-mail, because : 1. non-verbal cues are missing ; 2. text-based cues are poor substitutes, which is aggravated by the fact that most of these cues are self-styled, non-standard, idiosyncratic, ... the meaning of the abbreviations "BTW", "AFAIK", and so on are still quite foggy to me. The wink and smile smileys are clear enough, but the other ones look like gibberish. 3. it would be really cool to use HTML-based e-mail, instead of plain text, because it would alleviate much of plain text's expressivity limitations. But I also know that this suggestion will not fly because people still use primitive text-based e-mail clients, and most list servers prohibit it. We might be able to pull it off later, though, when we become server self-sufficient. Alain: Sorry for being so dense when it comes to humour. In my defense, I would like to point out some of the factors that make humorous communication fail: there are cultural differences, the limitations of plain text (above), the lack of familiarity with each other... Alain: So don't make any jokes anymore ... just kidding! :)) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com
