Alain,
I'm using it.
>How does it compare with MPW ?
Well, MPW is in the long run more powerful, OTOH development on CW (by
Metrowerks, not "in" by you) proceeds faster and CW is easier to learn
since it has project files instead of requiring you to write batch commands
into a Makefile (this has been automated a bit, but CW is still easier to
use).
>Are there any other development environments that a

MPW and CW are the only viable options AFAIK. I never heard about anyone
using GCC (GNU's compiler) for serious work, but I guess it might be an
option in MPW's usability range, although I think the Mac version is
lacking development at the moment. Anthony can surely rectify this.

If the courses are free and you can afford to buy the books and a copy of
CodeWarrior and you're serious about learning C++ programming in
CodeWarrior, go for it!
