my server at work doesn't have a news server.

not everybody has a news server and messages can be lost and expire
which makes cataloguing past mail difficult.

i think both is a better idea. a mailing list for developers and a
newsgroup for people who are interested in talking about the product.
i.e. a newsgroup like the hypercard newsgroup and a mailing list for
people who actually want to help make the product.
