I have definitely made some similar "discoveries" regarding obtaining
equiptment and what have you... I'm tempted to complain but I won't,
instead I will say that Schlumberger has what you want via online sales
only, there online store has all their readers and cards and kits they sell
that is up to date (www.cardstore.slb.com).
In the greater LA area, Litronic (in Orange County - Irvine) makes card
readers that I've used (infamous for the Litronic 210 reader) and they have
an online store (www.litronic.com). I don't know if you can go to their
office and buy one direct from them, but you can ask them.
Hope this helps,
- Craig

I recently purchased this book, browsed thru' it quickly, and am getting
ready to implement some ideas. I quite liked the approach and organization.
Apropos Part 3 of the book, I am now hunting for a suitable card reader here
in L.A.; this city seems quite bereft of smart card eqpmt and vendors. I
visited the Gemplus webstore, and figured I'll order their GEM PC 410
reader, but found no info about how long it takes to ship; I do not want to
have to wait 2 - 4 weeks to receive the stuff by mail.
(1) I have looked thru' the supported devices list on the OCF site. What
are other card reader models, besides the above GEM PC 410, that I can buy
to work with the IBM MFC 3.5 card that is included with the book? I am
using a PC running Windows 98 (and JDK 1.2).
(2) Any one know/recommend a store or sales office in the Greater L.A. area,
that I can get a card reader from TODAY?? (Gemplus has a local office, but
there's only a secretary-type person answering the phone; she couldn't help,
but gave me a number in Pennsylvania to contact :). I called up another
local company called MagTek; not much help there either -- they took down my
number and said they would call back. :)).
Thanks.
