(www.gemplus.com) I checked it, It is indicated that GemPC410 is in stock and
available in all CANADA and USA. If you have question about time delivery you

Krish,
You encounter the problem that smart card readers are not yet a usual consumer
device you can find in any store. And the manufacturers, even Gemplus, are still
more used to sell by quantities to organizations than on an individual basis to
end-user consumers. My advice to my friend of IBM who have written this fine
book: sell your book in a box containing also a reader!! After all, smart card
manufacturers when they sell evaluation kits for their cards, join always a card
reader....

I recently purchased this book, browsed thru' it quickly, and am getting
ready to implement some ideas. I quite liked the approach and organization.
Apropos Part 3 of the book, I am now hunting for a suitable card reader here
in L.A.; this city seems quite bereft of smart card eqpmt and vendors. I
visited the Gemplus webstore, and figured I'll order their GEM PC 410
reader, but found no info about how long it takes to ship; I do not want to
have to wait 2 - 4 weeks to receive the stuff by mail.
(1) I have looked thru' the supported devices list on the OCF site. What
are other card reader models, besides the above GEM PC 410, that I can buy
to work with the IBM MFC 3.5 card that is included with the book? I am
using a PC running Windows 98 (and JDK 1.2).
(2) Any one know/recommend a store or sales office in the Greater L.A. area,
that I can get a card reader from TODAY?? (Gemplus has a local office, but
there's only a secretary-type person answering the phone; she couldn't help,
but gave me a number in Pennsylvania to contact :). I called up another
local company called MagTek; not much help there either -- they took down my
number and said they would call back. :)).
