There was an RFP on this issue that has been accepted. As the
OCF work in progress papers (RFPs and RFCs) are now available
on line, you can find it in the work-in-progress page. URLs are:
RFPs RFCs - Technical Committee Process Page:
http://www.opencard.org/work/
PKCS11 Interface for OCF:
http://www.opencard.org/work/rfp-4/rfp-4.html
Unfortunately there has been no RFC (i.e., proposal) on this
issue since this vote. There are many reasons: technical ones
that are detailed in RFP4 (e.g., does it make sense to have a Java
version of a non-OO API), political ones (do we have the rights
to label something "PKCS11" when it does not conform to the
standard C API ? What does RSA think of it ?), and at last, we
have been wondering if the right solution for crypto APIs would
not be to get closer to the regular Java models (e.g., make
providers for JCA/JCE APIs) if this is possible.
Any comments on this subject are more than welcome. The RFP4
from Lothar is a very good work, worth reading. Also note that
since november99 it is possible for everybody to propose OCF
enhancements (i.e., RFPs or RFCs, see www.opencard.org/work/
for more details) at the condition that the proposal must be
"sponsored" by a consortium member.
Cheers,
Christophe.
