Jon,
this is interesting. For your information: Many of us here have used the GCR
410 with the pure Java driver for at least a year or so, and for some of us this
is our favorit software/hardware combination (besides an IBM internal reader
that is not sold externally in small quantities). Some of us, including me,
also have a Thinkpad 600E, and on mine is Windows 98 too (blush). So it must be
that your programs exercise some limits that our's don't.
