Hi to all. I have just now a last minute problem that is creating a big
trouble with an installation of a network of 10 pc where all the software
access is based on a custom application I developed using Smart Card. Th
readers I'm using are Gemplus GCR410 that are connected to the serial port,
powered with a dc 5V source obtainend from the ps2 keyboard (or mouse)
connection. The fact is that I used one of these units for some months
connecting to a ps port of my notebook alternating the tests with a windows
98 machine desktop without any kind of problems. Now, connecting the same
card readers with a new pc with this characteristics: PC Pentium III 1 Gb,
128 Mb ram, motherboard transcendt asl3 chipset 815, a network card Allied
telesyn AT 2550 TX 10/100 mbs, ati video card 2 Mb standard. When I connect
the reader the machine stop (without any error, simply stop to work). If I
disconnect the power cable (connected with the serial connection on the same
computer) everything start and is ready. If I connect the reader before the
pc is powered on the startup procedure goes to the network user and password
login prompt, then as the computer try to connect to the network stop all
the operations (only the mouse seems to move over the screen, without any
effect) and when I disconnect the power cable of the reader the startup
proceed regularly.
I tried to connect the reader with an external power source, using both the
serial COM1 and COM2 and using another identical pc and I can't imagine what
can be the problem and how I can solve this.

Thank you to help me asap. Enrico Miglino
