No, clone mode is when you have the same picture duplicated on the 2 
screens, at the same resolution.

You can have only the monitor enabled and thus the panel disabled by 
adding the following line to the Device section of your xorg conf :
Option "ActiveDevice" "CRT"

The external monitor is probably not capable to handle the resolution 
and refresh rate of your panel, and thus is displaying nothing 
(openchrome is currently only able to display the same resolution and 
refresh rate on all the outputs).
The xorg log would tell for sure.
